Core aeration and overseeding for compacted Ohio Valley lawns

If water beads on the surface and the grass thins every summer, the soil is tight. Fertilizer sits on top. Aeration pulls cores so air, water, and seed can reach the root zone.

The work

This is not a grooming pass. It is a soil pass.

Valley yards compact from winter, foot traffic, and clay. Airport-suburb developments often have thin topsoil over fill. Both need holes in the ground before another bag of feed will do much.

Family-owned in Steubenville since 1990. Bryan and Nathan Paulman still own the routes.

Why do this

Why aeration is worth doing before you buy more fertilizer

Clay and winter traffic seal the surface. Water runs off. Seed sits on top and dies. Cores open the soil so the next feeding and the next rain actually reach the roots. Skip aeration on a compacted valley lot and you are paying to fertilize a crust.

Scope

What we do on an aeration visit

Core aeration, then seed where the stand is thin. Timing is fall-first in this climate. Spring is a second window, not the best one.

  • Core aeration on cool-season turf
  • Overseeding thin or bare areas
  • Follow-up feed when the property is already on a fertilization program
  • Notes on irrigation and traffic so the seed is not wasted

Timing

When aeration pays

Fall, after the heat breaks and before the ground locks. That is when seed germinates and roots grow. A spring-only aeration is better than nothing and worse than a fall visit.

Questions

Aeration questions

Will there be plugs on the lawn?

Yes. That is the point. They break down. Do not rake them off the same day.

Can you aerate and fertilize in the same season?

Yes. Most properties that need aeration already belong on the fertilization calendar.

Large rural lots?

Ask. Acreage is a different quote than a Wintersville or Imperial house lawn.
